Throughout his tenure, President Donald Trump has often criticized NATO leaders, yet his stance during the recent summit in Ankara showed a notable change.

The two-day summit held in Turkey's capital featured contrasting positions from the US president. Early sessions saw him direct criticisms toward the alliance, but by the conclusion, he described the meetings as marked by "friendship and unity" among participants.

In a press conference shortly after reiterating his dissatisfaction with NATO, Trump stated, "I just want to say there was a lot of love in that room."

He further mentioned that several leaders expressed their appreciation directly to him, telling him, "Sir, we love you," adding, "These are mature people saying that. Isn't that nice?" according to the New York Times.

Trump continued, "Maybe they were trying to influence me, and in a way, they succeeded. There was a great deal of solidarity in that room."

Key Outcomes of the Summit

According to the New York Times as reviewed by Al-Ain News, the summit produced some progress, notably NATO countries pledging $80 billion in military aid to Ukraine over the current and following two years. This includes both new commitments and previously announced support.

Trump informed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky that the United States would permit Ukraine to manufacture Patriot air defense systems to protect itself from Russian missiles.

Regarding relations with Turkey, the US president stated he had not yet made a final decision on allowing Ankara to purchase F-35 fighter jets.

However, he indicated a tendency to approve the deal, citing Turkey's stance during the conflict between the United States and Israel on one side and Iran on the other, as well as his "strong friendship" with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.
