A commitment to refrain from providing Iran with any weapons or military equipment was disclosed by US President Donald Trump, who attributed the pledge to his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping, during an interview with Fox News. Trump added that the Chinese side also offered to help ensure freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz.

During the interview, Trump was asked about the significance of Chinese support for Iran in the context of talks between Washington and Beijing that took place during his recent visit to the Chinese capital. He clarified that the issue was among those discussed between the two sides, stating: "I mean, when you say support, they are not going to war against us or anything like that."

Trump quoted Xi Jinping as saying: "He will not provide military equipment, that's a big statement, he said it today, that's a big statement, and he said it firmly!" The US president added that his Chinese counterpart simultaneously noted that his country purchases large quantities of oil from Iran and wishes to continue doing so.
