An American soldier and a British soldier lost their lives in a training accident in northern Iraq, according to statements issued separately by the British Defense Secretary and the US Army on Monday.

British Defense Secretary John Healey told the British House of Commons, "A training accident occurred in northern Iraq yesterday resulting in the death of a British Army member."

Healey added that the soldier’s family had been notified of the death, without providing further details.

In a separate statement, the US Army announced that an American soldier died during a military exercise at Erbil Air Base.

The base, which hosts US forces, is located in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq near Erbil International Airport.

The US Army stated, "The training was conducted in cooperation with our partners in the British Army, who also lost a soldier," noting that the incident remains under investigation.
