Ukraine is preparing to purchase 100 Patriot missiles using a $1 billion loan from the European Union to strengthen its military capabilities.

Ukraine is set to enhance its military strength by acquiring approximately 100 Patriot missiles through a $1 billion loan provided by the European Union.
The Ukrainian Ministry of Defense announced that it is in the process of purchasing around 100 Patriot missiles funded by this EU loan. According to a statement released yesterday, Kyiv has taken the initial step toward this acquisition and has begun receiving missiles from its European partners' stockpiles for the first time this year.
Business Insider reported that the Ukrainian defense statement coincides with Kyiv sending urgent requests to 40 allied countries, seeking their Patriot missile reserves. These missiles are primarily used by Ukrainian forces to intercept Russian ballistic and cruise missile threats.
Previously, Ukraine stated it had neutralized nearly 90% of such missile threats but has issued warnings over several months about recurring shortages of the Patriot interceptor missiles essential for air defense.
Given the high value of these interceptor missiles, which cost millions of dollars, they are highly prized by militaries worldwide. In response, Kyiv has proposed an exchange system whereby it would replenish donor countries’ Patriot missile stocks with shipments it receives in the future.
Furthermore, Ukraine is expected to receive several hundred Patriot PAC-2 interceptor missiles in the coming years under a $4.5 billion financing agreement with Germany. This deal aims to supply ammunition and launchers for air defense.
The production of Patriot missiles is primarily handled by Raytheon, which plans to manufacture 420 PAC-2 GEM-T interceptor missiles annually by 2027. Lockheed Martin anticipates producing over 600 of the more advanced PAC-3 interceptor missiles in the same year.
German arms manufacturers Rheinmetall and MBDA are also competing to begin licensed production of these missiles.
Ukraine's demand for interceptor missiles has surged amid monthly attacks involving dozens of ballistic and hypersonic missile threats. Local authorities reported that Russia recently launched 25 such missiles in a single night.
Ukraine has consistently relied on donations from allies and partners to maintain its Patriot missile inventory. A significant portion of these funds is channeled through a U.S. program that enables donors to pool resources to purchase key weapons, including F-16 aircraft ammunition and Patriot interceptor missiles, from the United States for Ukraine.
