UK's Starmer Weighs Stepping Down; Burnham Seen as Successor
Reports suggest UK PM Keir Starmer is considering resignation, with Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham the leading candidate to replace him.

The prospect of British Prime Minister Keir Starmer voluntarily resigning in favor of Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham has gained significant traction, according to sources cited by the Daily Telegraph. This scenario unfolds as internal pressure mounts on the leadership of the ruling Labour Party.
Starmer is conducting a comprehensive review of "all options" available to him, the same sources indicated, despite his public assertions of readiness to confront any challenges to his leadership. The newspaper reported that the resignation idea could become a practical choice if the various factions within Labour reach a consensus on Burnham as a potential replacement.
The Daily Telegraph added that Starmer will not take any steps until the results of the by-election in the Macclesfield constituency become clear. Through this, the party aims to avoid internal divisions that could worsen with any early announcement of a resignation.
A party source told the newspaper that pressure is being applied to prevent a resignation announcement before the election, due to fears of triggering internal conflicts between factions supporting and opposing Burnham, which could lead to a loss of control over the party's political landscape.
Burnham's Path to Parliament via Macclesfield
On May 14, Burnham announced his candidacy for the Macclesfield constituency in northern England in the House of Commons by-election. The following day, the Labour Party's National Executive Committee officially ratified his nomination.
The election is scheduled for June 18, following the resignation of Labour MP Josh Simmons to clear the way for Burnham to enter Parliament. This move could pave the way for him to become prime minister in the future, as British political convention requires the head of government to be a member of Parliament.
Burnahm had previously attempted to enter the House of Commons through a by-election in Manchester in January, but party leadership blocked his candidacy. This came amid fears he would become a direct rival to Starmer for the party leadership and the premiership, according to Sky News.
