The United States has accused Cuba of conducting a decades-long espionage operation that penetrated the highest levels of the US government in Washington.

The United States accused Cuba on Monday of orchestrating a spying campaign spanning several decades, claiming Havana successfully infiltrated the highest ranks of the US government in Washington.
According to a report by the French news agency Agence France-Presse, the US State Department stated that Cuba "infiltrated the upper echelons of the American government, recruited and sponsored generations of American activists, and supported an unprecedented wave of leftist terrorism on US soil."
The department added that this campaign was "one of the most persistent and damaging foreign intelligence penetrations in United States history."
In related developments, US military exercises conducted in forests simulating Cuban terrain have raised concerns in Havana.
A few days earlier, CBS News revealed that the US Department of Defense is examining several possible military scenarios for dealing with Cuba.
US officials speaking to CBS News on condition of anonymity said that military planners have recently discussed multiple options, including a large-scale air operation potentially involving troops from the 101st Airborne Division, a prominent US unit specializing in rapid offensive operations.
The network previously reported that Cuba has become an increasing security challenge after acquiring unidentified source attack drones.
