Washington and Beijing have agreed that Iran must never possess a nuclear weapon, a White House official announced Friday.

A White House official announced Friday that the United States and China have reached a consensus that Iran must never be allowed to acquire a nuclear weapon. The two nations also stressed the importance of keeping the Strait of Hormuz open for maritime traffic. The official described the meeting between President Donald Trump and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping as "good," during which they discussed ways to bolster economic cooperation, according to Reuters.
Following the landmark meeting, China's foreign ministry issued a statement calling for building "stable and strategic" relations with Washington, framed around managing differences and strengthening communication channels. The ministry added that the two presidents exchanged views on several regional and international issues during their recent talks.
The ministry further clarified that the Taiwan issue remains the "most important determinant" in Sino-American relations, reiterating Beijing's "firm and unchangeable" opposition to U.S. arms sales to Taiwan.
