US Court Sets June 2027 Trial Date for Nicolás Maduro

A United States court ruled on Wednesday that Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro must appear for trial in the US on June 1, 2027.

This decision follows Maduro's capture during a failed military operation in Caracas in January.

The former leader, aged 63, and his wife, Cilia Flores, aged 69, have been held in a Brooklyn prison in New York City for over seven months. Both have pleaded not guilty to charges involving drug trafficking and firearms possession.

Maduro faces four charges in the United States, including "drug-related terrorism," while his wife is charged with three offenses.

Both deny all accusations against them.

Several months ago, the US administration approved Venezuela's payment of legal fees for Maduro and his wife, reversing a previous policy under President Donald Trump that barred Caracas from covering legal expenses due to sanctions imposed on Venezuela.
