U.S. Imposes 50% Tariffs on $20 Billion in Canadian Imports
Washington and Ottawa announced late Friday they failed to reach a trade agreement, prompting the U.S. to impose 50% tariffs on $20 billion in Canadian goods effective Saturday at midnight.

U.S. and Canadian officials confirmed late Friday that negotiations toward a new trade agreement had collapsed, with Washington announcing it would levy tariffs on certain Canadian imports.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney stated he was suspending trade talks with Washington. In response, a U.S. official confirmed that 50% tariffs on Canadian imports would take effect at midnight.
Scope and legal basis of the tariffs
A senior official in President Donald Trump’s administration said duties under Section 338 would apply to approximately $20 billion worth of Canadian goods, entering into force at midnight Saturday.
Carney reiterated that Canada had suspended trade negotiations and added that Canada would respond to the new tariffs with equivalent measures.
Timeline of negotiations
The U.S. decision followed three consecutive days of talks in Washington between Canadian Minister of International Trade Dominique Leblanc and U.S. Trade Representative Jamison Greer.
