Washington Wildfires Burn 250,000 Acres, Trigger Evacuations and Power Outages

Washington State officials confirmed that wildfires have consumed more than 250,000 acres across the state, forcing widespread evacuations and causing electricity disruptions in the Spokane area.

Statewide Emergency and Fire Restrictions

Governor Bob Ferguson declared a statewide emergency and imposed a ban on all outdoor burning. Authorities reported no injuries or fatalities linked to the fires as of the latest update.

Spokane Municipal Response

Spokane Mayor Lisa Brown stated that several critical facilities in the city had been evacuated, including water treatment plants, a waste-to-energy power station, and a U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs hospital.

Approximately 200 homes in Spokane were evacuated, though officials cautioned the figure was expected to rise. Brown noted that the affected zones spanned large sections of the city and added, “These are broad areas of the city, so I assume the number will be larger than that.”

Utility Impact and Regional Context

The utility provider serving eastern Washington reported that 60,000 customers were without power due to the fires.

This summer’s wildfire activity has also affected other parts of the Pacific Northwest. Nearly 34,000 lightning strikes last month ignited multiple fires and prompted evacuation orders across southern British Columbia.
