Chinese President Xi Jinping warned Donald Trump that mishandling the Taiwan issue could lead to a conflict between the two nations.

A conflict between Beijing and Washington could erupt if the Taiwan issue is mishandled, Chinese President Xi Jinping warned his US counterpart Donald Trump on Thursday. The warning came during talks between the two leaders in Beijing, as reported by state broadcaster CCTV.
According to the channel, Xi stated that "the Taiwan issue is the most important issue in China-US relations." He added: "If it is handled incorrectly, the two countries may collide or even enter into a conflict, pushing the entire China-US relationship into an extremely dangerous situation."
Beijing has long demanded the incorporation of Taiwan, a self-governing island.
Earlier on the same day, Trump told Xi that the two superpowers would share a "great future" during their meeting at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing.
"It is an honor to be with you, it is an honor to be your friend, and the relationship between China and the United States will be better than ever," Trump added.
