China Eliminates 12,200 University Programs to Align with AI Development
Chinese universities have canceled over 12,000 traditional bachelor's programs to introduce new technology-focused disciplines aligned with artificial intelligence demands.

Chinese higher education institutions are undergoing a significant restructuring of their academic offerings to align with the country's developmental objectives, replacing thousands of traditional degree programs with modern technological courses tailored to the era of artificial intelligence.
According to data from the Chinese Ministry of Education reported by the official news agency Xinhua, universities across China have canceled or suspended 12,200 bachelor's degree programs between 2021 and 2025. Concurrently, these institutions have introduced 10,200 new majors, indicating that over 30% of university programs have undergone substantial changes to meet current market requirements.
The cancellations have been concentrated mainly in fields such as arts, humanities, foreign languages, and management—areas now considered outdated or oversaturated in both domestic and international labor markets.
This restructuring coincides with youth unemployment rates in China exceeding 16%, prompting the government to accelerate the integration of next-generation artificial intelligence disciplines into the real economy. Notably, nine Chinese universities have launched specialized programs like "Embodied AI."
Academic Adaptations to Market Demands
Academic monitoring data reveal that educational institutions are compelled to swiftly adjust to economic shifts. For example, Shanghai University of Science and Technology has halted admissions to its product design program this year due to declining employment prospects, influenced by AI technologies capable of performing core tasks such as modeling and digital simulation.
Additionally, Beijing's Chinese Communications University has merged traditional film photography courses with modern television and film production programs to address the needs of live broadcasting and short video content.
Zhou Zhao Hui, a senior researcher at the National Institute of Educational Sciences, explained that while program cancellations represent an immediate response, a deeper long-term approach is necessary. He emphasized that the flexibility of the education system remains crucial for enabling students to develop knowledge portfolios that adapt to contemporary labor market fluctuations, moving away from the traditional notion of permanent job stability linked to a single university major.
