Grok Imagine Video 1.5 has claimed the top spot on the Image-to-Video Arena leaderboard, achieving an Elo score near 1,330. This release follows OpenAI's discontinuation of the Sora 2 standalone app in April 2026, prompting creators to seek alternative tools. Grok offers 720p video output at $4.20 per minute, which is 86% less expensive than Sora 2 Pro’s $30 per minute rate, and also undercuts Google Veo’s pricing.

The update notably improves generation speed, with the fast mode producing a 6-second 720p clip in 25 seconds, a reduction from over 40 seconds in the previous version. This speed enhancement is significant for AI agents operating in near-real-time workflows. Additionally, xAI reports enhancements in motion physics and object detail, ensuring elements like hair, fabric, and moving objects maintain consistency rather than dissolving mid-frame. The model now includes native synchronized audio, an area where Sora previously faced challenges, according to Alici.AI.

Leaderboard Success and Community Validation

Before its full release, Grok Imagine Video 1.5 secured the leaderboard lead through a Preview build that outperformed competitors in DesignArena’s blind voting. This community-driven evaluation, which hides the model identities from voters, provides a validation that is less susceptible to bias than company benchmarks.

Availability and Pricing Structure

Grok Imagine Video 1.5 is currently accessible via grok.com, X.com, and mobile applications for iOS and Android. Users can utilize the free web tier without requiring an X Premium subscription. The SuperGrok subscription, priced at $30 per month, offers extended generation limits. API usage costs $0.08 per second for 480p resolution and $4.20 per minute for 720p output. In comparison, Sora 2 Pro’s equivalent pricing is $30 per minute, while Google Veo charges approximately $12 per minute for similar quality.

Resolution Limitations and Future Developments

At present, Grok Imagine Video 1.5’s maximum resolution is capped at 720p, whereas several competitors provide 1080p options. xAI has indicated plans for a Pro Mode featuring higher resolution, although no official release date has been announced.

Expanded Capabilities with Agent and Developer Modes

Alongside the video model update, xAI introduced Agent Mode for Grok Imagine, transforming it from a basic image generator into a comprehensive creative workspace capable of managing projects from concept to completed video. A developer-focused Grok Build beta, which includes a command-line interface, was also launched concurrently.

With the removal of Sora’s consumer app and Grok’s availability at no cost, competitive dynamics have shifted, placing pressure on Google and Runway. xAI’s current advantages lie in speed and affordability, while the adequacy of 720p resolution for professional applications remains a critical factor for the model’s broader adoption.
