Norway to establish expert group on privacy risks of AI-powered wearables

A Norwegian government initiative targeting privacy risks posed by AI-equipped wearable devices is advancing, with Digital Minister Karianne Tung confirming the formation of a dedicated expert advisory group. The move follows official scrutiny of smart glasses and similar head-worn technologies that embed cameras, internet connectivity, and emerging facial recognition capabilities.

Regulatory focus on AI-integrated wearables

Tung, speaking to AFP, stated that authorities are actively examining how to regulate camera-enabled wearables — including models produced by Meta and Snap — due to mounting concerns over unauthorized recording and surveillance in public spaces. She emphasized a “clear trend toward combining artificial intelligence with cameras and microphones built into glasses, headphones, hats and other objects we use in everyday life.”

Public backlash and terminology

Civil liberties advocates have raised objections to the devices, citing intrusions on personal privacy. Some members of the public have labeled them “pervert glasses,” a term that has contributed to significant consumer backlash. The minister acknowledged these concerns as part of the broader impetus for regulatory review.

Potential restrictions on facial recognition

“We must prevent this equipment from being used to monitor other people in public places,” Tung said. She indicated that proposed measures could extend to banning the use of facial recognition technology to identify individuals without consent in public settings. No final decision on a full ban has been announced, but the government is evaluating regulatory options.
