On June 19, Claude Guillemot, co-founder of Ubisoft and Executive Vice President of Operations, died in a small plane crash near La Baule in northwestern France. He was piloting a twin-engine Cessna 421 that crashed while approaching a local airfield. A flight instructor accompanying him also lost their life. Guillemot was 69 years old.

Claude Guillemot was one of five brothers who established Ubisoft in 1986. While his brother Yves Guillemot acts as the company's CEO and public representative, Claude managed the internal operations and development of game technology as Executive Vice President of Operations. In addition, he served as CEO of Guillemot Corporation, the family's separate hardware business producing Thrustmaster racing and flight simulation peripherals and Hercules audio products distributed in over 150 countries.

Corporate governance documents from June 5 indicate that Guillemot Corporation had recently separated the CEO and Chairman roles, a restructuring now complicated by Claude's unexpected death. No public announcement has been made regarding an interim leader for either position at Guillemot Corporation.

Ubisoft is currently experiencing significant financial difficulties, reporting a €159 million loss for the fiscal year 2024–25. Net bookings declined by 20.5% compared to the previous year, partly due to underperforming titles and delays in releases such as Assassin's Creed Shadows. Claude Guillemot was responsible for the operational infrastructure designed to mitigate such issues.

With Claude's passing, Yves Guillemot faces questions concerning the management of both Ubisoft and the family’s hardware business. Shareholders of both entities are pressing for a turnaround. Given that Guillemot Corporation is listed on Euronext Paris, maintaining governance continuity is a matter of public market interest beyond internal family succession.

There has been no announcement of a succession plan for Claude Guillemot’s roles at Ubisoft or Guillemot Corporation. For consumers, the immediate impact appears limited, as Thrustmaster and Hercules products continue to be distributed and Ubisoft’s game release schedule remains an independent operational matter. However, the longer-term concern is whether leadership instability will delay critical decisions at a company already facing operational challenges.
