WhatsApp Introduces AI-Generated Media Labels for Channels
WhatsApp is rolling out a new feature to label AI-generated or AI-edited photos and videos in Channels, initially available to select iOS beta users after an Android rollout.

WhatsApp is preparing to launch a new feature that applies clear labels to photos, videos, and other media created or modified using artificial intelligence within its Channels function. The move aims to strengthen transparency and assist users in distinguishing between authentic content and AI-generated material.
How the labeling system works
The feature enables Channel administrators to attach a visible label or classification to posts containing images or video clips generated or altered by AI tools—including outputs from Meta AI, ChatGPT, and Gemini. According to technical reports, the capability has begun appearing for a limited group of users on the iOS beta version of WhatsApp, following its earlier release to Android beta users as part of the platform’s broader effort to expand AI-content detection tools.
Once applied, the label cannot be removed and will appear to all Channel followers—including other admins. This design ensures consistent visibility and reinforces clarity about the nature of published media.
Automatic and manual labeling
The feature does not rely solely on manual classification. Reports indicate WhatsApp may also automatically detect certain AI-generated media and apply the appropriate label without administrator input.
This development arrives amid growing realism in AI-produced images and videos—making it increasingly difficult for users to discern authentic content from synthetic or altered material.
Regulatory and industry context
The labeling tool may also help Channel administrators comply with existing laws in some countries that require disclosure when AI is used to create or modify media.
As of now, the feature remains accessible only to a limited number of users on the iOS beta version. WhatsApp has not announced an official timeline for its global rollout to all users.
The initiative reflects a broader trend among social media platforms to increase transparency around AI-generated content—supporting users’ ability to determine whether the photos and videos they encounter are real or produced or modified using modern technology.
