Australia will spend $10 billion AUD to boost national fuel reserves and create a permanent government stockpile.

Australia is injecting 10 billion Australian dollars ($7.22 billion USD) into expanding its national fuel stockpile and establishing a permanent government reserve, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced. The initiative aims to shield the country from future supply disruptions.
The expanded reserve, totaling roughly one billion liters (264 million gallons), will guarantee at least 50 days of fuel supply within Australian borders, Albanese explained. This marks a significant increase from the current estimated 30 days of reserves, which are held by private companies.
Australia imports approximately 80% of its fuel needs and has experienced sporadic local shortages since the outbreak of conflict in the Middle East. The new package allocates 3.2 billion Australian dollars specifically for the oil reserve, targeting a long-term boost in diesel and aviation fuel supplies along with enhanced storage capacity.
Separately, 7.5 billion Australian dollars will support fuel and fertilizer supply and storage through loans, equity stakes, guarantees, insurance, and price support mechanisms.
