Adam Wharton has stated he will not "sit and cry" after being excluded from Thomas Tuchel’s England squad for the upcoming World Cup. Despite an impressive season at Crystal Palace, the 22-year-old midfielder was notably absent from the 26-man group announced last week for the tournament in North America.

Wharton was left out when Tuchel revealed his final squad, despite his key role in Crystal Palace’s recent Conference League success. The former Blackburn Rovers player has been a standout performer, but Tuchel chose more experienced midfielders for the national team’s campaign.

Following Palace's historic victory over Rayo Vallecano in the Conference League final held in Leipzig, Wharton showed maturity in addressing his omission. "That's just part of football. It was never a guarantee I was going to go. I knew that," he said during a news conference.

The midfielder also shared details of a personal phone call from the England manager. Tuchel informed Wharton directly that he had not been selected, emphasizing how close the decision was. Wharton recounted, "When he called me, he just told me I wasn't there. He said it was close. But yeah, like I said, that's football. I'm not going to sit here and cry about it. Still had two games for Palace to go. Obviously tonight being a massive one, I don't really dwell on those things too much. It's not the end of the world. I'm still young."

Despite any disappointment, Wharton’s performance in the Conference League final was outstanding. Although he was an injury doubt before the match against Rayo Vallecano, he earned Man of the Match honors, helping Palace secure their first European trophy. His powerful shot led to Jean-Philippe Mateta’s winning goal, a decisive moment in the game held at the Red Bull Arena in Germany.

Wharton’s control of the game’s tempo underlined his skill, even if it was not enough to sway Tuchel’s squad selection for this World Cup cycle. Looking ahead, he remains optimistic about future opportunities with England. "Hopefully there's other tournaments and World Cups that I can go to in the future. But yeah, I was just focused on Palace and coming here and getting the win, which we have done," he said. "I'm glad with that and I've got a couple places booked to go [on holiday], but I'm just going to enjoy my summer and tonight."
