Alonso’s assessment of Caicedo’s setback

The Ecuador international came on as a second-half substitute for Pedro Neto at Stamford Bridge, returning from a training knock that had ruled him out of the opening league fixture at Fulham and the Carabao Cup win over Luton.

Xabi Alonso offered no definitive diagnosis following the match, noting Caicedo appeared visibly upset while leaving the pitch and was replaced by Valentin Barco — also a former Brighton player.

“Hopefully it wasn’t new, and hopefully it wasn’t more than last time,” Alonso said of the 24-year-old’s latest injury concern.

He added: “He was cautious to stop and say that he wasn’t feeling the best. We will assess it during the week.”

Unusual midfield setup and Enzo Fernandez’s absence

Chelsea deployed natural full-back Malo Gusto in central midfield alongside Romeo Lavia, while captain Reece James entered the game from the bench to operate in midfield alongside Caicedo as Brighton gained momentum in the second half.

Enzo Fernandez was absent from the matchday squad entirely — omitted again after missing the Luton fixture and unseen at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.

Rumours of a potential departure persist ahead of Tuesday’s transfer deadline.

“We want the best for the team,” Alonso stated.

“That’s why we took the decision today for Luton and today. We need to be aware as to what’s going to develop before Tuesday. We will prepare for all the scenarios, but I assure you that from Wednesday, we will have a good enough squad to compete in the Premier League.”

Neto’s role and future at Chelsea

Pedro Neto scored Chelsea’s second goal of the match and delivered an impressive performance in an unfamiliar wing-back role.

Despite prior speculation linking him with Tottenham and Manchester City, his display suggests he will remain central to Alonso’s plans.

When asked about Neto’s future, the manager replied: “I don’t guarantee anything to anyone.”

He continued: “I was very happy with Pedro. He did really well; he’s going to be very important for the whole season, because he has very special qualities.”
