Alonso to discuss red card with Palmer after Chelsea loss
Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso plans a meeting with Cole Palmer following the player's dismissal during Saturday's defeat by Tottenham.

Xabi Alonso intends to speak with Cole Palmer after the forward received a straight red card during Chelsea’s Saturday loss to Tottenham. The incident occurred at Stamford Bridge, where the Blues also conceded goals from Mike Penders’ own goal and Mathys Tel.
Palmer sent off in ten-minute spell
Palmer collected two yellow cards within a frantic ten-minute window. The first booking resulted from an altercation with Mateus Fernandes, while the second followed a challenge on Conor Gallagher. His early exit left Chelsea shorthanded as they trailed 1-0 with fifteen to twenty minutes remaining.
Alonso expressed frustration regarding the disciplinary lapse. "Absolutely. I've not seen it but I've been told it's right," Alonso stated when asked about the referee's decision. He noted that the team had avoided red cards until this point and emphasized the need for maturity in difficult moments.
Manager demands squad discipline
The Chelsea boss insisted that emotional control is essential for competing in major competitions. He revealed that the squad had discussed the risks of early bookings prior to the match. "We need to work and we need to improve on that... one first yellow card can be decisive," Alonso added, describing the event as a learning curve for both the individual and the group.
Alonso confirmed he would review the footage before speaking with Palmer. "I need to check the action to talk with Cole but it is one to learn for the future for sure,” he said.
Debate over aggressive conduct
Controversy extended beyond Palmer’s dismissal. Rival manager Roberto De Zerbi suggested Palmer’s initial foul on Fernandes might have warranted a direct red card. Meanwhile, pundit Gary Neville argued that Morgan Rogers was fortunate to remain on the pitch, noting that Rogers had previously avoided a second booking against Everton.
These incidents have fueled discussions about Chelsea’s aggression on the field. While supporters value passion, the club faces significant challenges due to suspensions removing key personnel from crucial fixtures.
Suspension impacts Carabao Cup clash
Palmer will serve a one-match ban across all domestic competitions, ruling him out of the Carabao Cup last-16 tie against Liverpool at Anfield on Wednesday night. This absence deprives Alonso of a creative outlet against his former club. However, Palmer remains eligible to return for the subsequent Premier League match against Manchester United.
