Aston Villa has entered advanced negotiations to sign Spanish defender Sergio Ramos on a free transfer, according to recent reports. The club is seeking immediate defensive reinforcement after injuries sidelined Pau Torres and Ian Maatsen during the match against Nottingham Forest.

Defensive urgency under Unai Emery

Manager Unai Emery is pushing for urgent strengthening of Villa’s backline, as the team competes across multiple competitions this season—including UEFA Champions League participation.

Ramos’ current unattached status facilitates the move: he is not under contract with any club, allowing negotiations outside the summer transfer window, provided Aston Villa has a vacant registration spot for the current season.

Ramos’ recent club history

Ramos spent 10 months with Mexican side Monterrey last year, appearing in 34 matches. Prior to that, he returned to his boyhood club Sevilla for the 2023–2024 season.

His most prominent career chapter unfolded at Real Madrid, where he made 671 appearances over 16 years, scoring 101 goals and registering 40 assists.

Trophies won at Real Madrid

At Real Madrid, Ramos won four UEFA Champions League titles, five La Liga championships, three UEFA Super Cups, four FIFA Club World Cups, and six domestic trophies.

After leaving Santiago Bernabéu in 2021, he joined Paris Saint-Germain and remained there for two seasons.

The 40-year-old defender is expected to undergo a medical examination next week. He has been without a club since departing Monterrey in December.
