Benfica Gains Financial Advantage as Mourinho Deal Delay Doubles Penalty Clause

Benfica's preparations for the upcoming season remain uncertain as the club's management has yet to finalize the identity of the head coach for the next campaign.

José Mourinho currently holds a valid contract with Benfica; however, all parties have agreed on his move to Real Madrid, contingent upon Florentino Pérez winning the club's presidential election.

The announcement of Mourinho's transfer was scheduled for today, but the entry of Enrique Riquelme into the Real Madrid presidential race has postponed the declaration.

This delay means the ten-day period following the end of the season—during which Mourinho could have terminated his contract with Benfica without penalty—is approaching its conclusion.

While this situation places Benfica's management in a dilemma regarding the coaching staff for the next season, it also presents an opportunity for the club to secure substantial financial gains if the contract is terminated after the deadline.

According to the Portuguese newspaper Record, Mourinho was required to pay 7 million euros to break his contract within ten days after the season's end. However, after this period expires, any club wishing to sign Mourinho must pay a fee of 15 million euros.

This increase could make Benfica the primary financial beneficiary of the delay, although uncertainty about the coaching future persists.

Marco Silva is anticipated to replace Mourinho as Benfica's coach, but the official announcement of Mourinho's appointment at Real Madrid may not occur until June 7, the date set for the presidential election, provided Florentino Pérez's victory is confirmed.
