Brandt scores in back-to-back Ajax wins amid Germany call-up speculation

Ajax midfielder Julian Brandt, 30, scored in both of his club’s recent 5–1 wins — against Fortuna Sittard and Willem II — intensifying discussion about a possible return to the Germany national team.

Brandt’s international absence and current focus

Speaking with NOS, Brandt declined to speculate on an imminent national team call-up. “No, because to be honest I have been out of it for quite a while now, about two years,” he said. “At the moment I am just focusing on Ajax.”

His stance on future selection

Brandt confirmed that his ambition to represent Germany remains intact. “Of course every player hopes that he will be called up,” he stated. “But if it is not this period, then perhaps next time.”

He acknowledged Thursday’s upcoming squad announcement as a routine date rather than a pivotal moment. “Thursday will not be a super special day for me, because I have played for Germany before,” he noted. “But of course you always have a little bit of hope.”

Reaction to potential non-selection

If omitted from the latest squad, Brandt said he would treat it without alarm. “If it does not happen, then it is no great drama,” he said. “Then we just carry on, and I will try to make sure he does select me next time. Or Thilo (Kehrer). That is fine too.”

Brandt’s most recent international appearance came in November 2024, in a 1–1 Nations League draw with Hungary — his first Germany match in a year. He has earned 48 caps for die Mannschaft overall. Germany next faces the Netherlands national team in the Nations League.
