Clashes Erupt in Budapest Before Arsenal and PSG Champions League Final
Violent confrontations between fans disrupted Budapest streets hours before the Champions League final between Arsenal and Paris Saint-Germain.
Several hours prior to the Champions League final showdown between Arsenal and Paris Saint-Germain, violent clashes erupted among fans in Budapest, Hungary. Videos circulating on social media depict street fights accompanied by flares lighting up the scene.
Earlier in the day, Arsenal supporters had been peacefully enjoying the atmosphere surrounding one of the club’s most significant matches. However, tensions escalated as confrontations broke out, leading to physical altercations with punches and kicks exchanged. One video shows a woman kicking a man who then stumbles backward before being attacked by three other men throwing punches.
Additional footage reveals bottles being hurled and groups charging at each other while engaging in fistfights. The sounds of breaking glass and French language exchanges are audible in some clips. It remains unclear whether any arrests have been made during these late-night disturbances ahead of the match at the Puskas Arena.
Authorities have deployed a substantial police presence around the stadium for the 5pm kickoff, reportedly the largest operation Budapest has organized for such an event, involving thousands of officers. Despite the game being sold out, reports indicate thousands of fans without tickets have gathered in the city to experience the event’s atmosphere.
Major General Dr. Janos Zoltan Kuczik, commander of operations, acknowledged the challenges posed by hosting fans from London and Paris simultaneously. He stated, “It’s no secret that having fans from London and Paris in Budapest at the same time poses a significant risk, but it is our job to minimize that risk.” He also mentioned that call centers have been reinforced with staff fluent in French and English and urged attendees to use public transportation on match day.
On the sporting front, Arsenal’s head coach Mikel Arteta expressed confidence in his team’s readiness to dethrone Paris Saint-Germain as European champions. Arsenal recently ended a 20-year wait for a Premier League title by edging out Manchester City and now aims to secure its first European trophy in its 140-year history.
PSG, the reigning champions after their 5-0 victory over Inter Milan last year, are favored by bookmakers to win again under Luis Enrique’s management. Arteta responded to this by saying, “They are defending the trophy, they were the last ones to earn that right to lift the trophy and they are the champions, but we are here to take that away from them.”
