Cristiano Ronaldo's continental curse: No European title since leaving Real Madrid
The Portuguese star has not won a continental trophy since the 2018 Champions League final with Real Madrid. A string of near-misses with Juventus, Manchester United, and Al-Nassr has deepened the narrative of a lingering "continental curse."

Cristiano Ronaldo has not lifted a continental trophy since he left Real Madrid in 2018. That night in Kyiv, where he won his fifth Champions League title, marked the last time the Portuguese forward stood atop Europe. Every club he has joined since — Juventus, Manchester United, and now Saudi Arabia's Al-Nassr — has ended in continental disappointment.
The pattern is consistent. Ronaldo gets close, often carrying his team with individual brilliance, only to fall short in the decisive moments. The question now, after yet another final defeat, is whether this is a cruel run of sporting misfortune or something more symbolic: a "Bernabéu ghost" that refuses to let him win a continental title in any shirt but the white of Real Madrid.
Kyiv: The last great night
The 2018 Champions League final in Kyiv was the perfect ending to Ronaldo's European journey with Real Madrid. He led the club to a third consecutive title, cementing a legacy of clutch performances on the biggest stage. At that moment, he seemed invincible in continental competition.
Yet that night has become a dividing line. Since leaving Madrid, Ronaldo has not replicated that success. He has maintained strong individual numbers, but the "Champions League magic" that defined his career appears to have stayed inside the Santiago Bernabéu walls.
Juventus and Manchester United: Close but not close enough
Ronaldo joined Juventus with the expectation that he would end the club's long wait for a Champions League title. The Italian side had a strong domestic and continental project. He scored crucial goals and delivered impressive individual performances, but the European campaign ended in repeated disappointment — against Ajax, Lyon, and Porto. Juventus never reached the final.
His return to Manchester United was meant to revive memories of his first stint at Old Trafford. But the English club was far from genuine contention, whether in the Champions League or the Europa League. The post-Madrid years became a series of incomplete attempts: Ronaldo kept his personal records intact, but the "continental gold" he once collected regularly remained out of reach.
From elite competition to Asia 2: Dreams evaporate
With Al-Nassr, Ronaldo entered multiple Asian tournaments as a heavy favourite. The squad boasted attacking talent capable of deciding matches at any moment. Yet the team fell in unexpected moments — against technically inferior sides or in matches where they dominated possession and chances.
The AFC Champions League 2, widely seen as a golden opportunity for Ronaldo and Al-Nassr to break the continental curse, ended the same way. Al-Nassr lost the final at home, in front of their own fans, to Japan's Gamba Osaka. These successive failures have amplified talk of a "continental curse" hanging over Ronaldo, especially given that the team had all the necessary components to win.
How many titles has Ronaldo lost with Al-Nassr?
Since joining Al-Nassr in January 2023, the club has not achieved the expected leap in titles, despite the enormous technical and commercial value Ronaldo brought. During this period, Ronaldo has lost a total of 14 trophies with Al-Nassr across domestic and continental competitions — a long series of failures in the final metres, whether by losing finals or early exits.
- In his first season (2022-2023), Al-Nassr failed to win the Saudi Pro League (title went to Al-Ittihad), lost the Saudi Super Cup, and were eliminated from the King's Cup by Al-Wehda.
- In 2023-2024, the suffering continued: they lost the league race, exited the AFC Champions League, and lost the King's Cup final on penalties to Al-Hilal.
- They also lost the Saudi Super Cup to Al-Hilal 1-2 in the semi-final.
- In 2024-2025, Al-Nassr finished third in the league, were eliminated from the AFC Champions League Elite in the semi-final by Kawasaki Frontale, lost the Saudi Super Cup final 1-4 to Al-Hilal, and exited the King's Cup in the round of 16 against Al-Taawoun.
- This season, they were knocked out of the King's Cup in the round of 16 by Al-Ittihad, lost the Saudi Super Cup final on penalties to Al-Ahli, and suffered the biggest shock: losing the AFC Champions League 2 final.
Why has Ronaldo failed continentally since leaving Real Madrid?
Several factors explain Ronaldo's inability to replicate his European success after leaving Real Madrid. The most prominent is the difference in quality of the projects he joined compared to the Spanish club at its peak. In Madrid, Ronaldo played within a stable system featuring historic names and immense experience in handling major tournaments — a formula that did not repeat in his subsequent stops.
The immense media and fan pressure that follows Ronaldo into every new experience has also made him constantly expected to single-handedly win every trophy. That is nearly impossible in modern football without a fully integrated collective system. Although the Portuguese star still maintains his scoring numbers and individual impact, continental competitions have proven in recent years that names alone are not always enough to achieve glory.
