Disaster for Alisha Lehmann!.. Leicester City Women drop to WSL2 after penalty shootout loss
Leicester City Women have been relegated from the Women's Super League following a penalty shootout defeat to Charlton Athletic in the play-off.

Leicester City Women will compete in the Women's Championship next season after losing a penalty shootout 2-1 to Charlton Athletic in the relegation play-off. The match, which remained goalless after 120 minutes under intense heat, ended with goalkeeper Katie Keane saving two penalties, but Leicester missed four of their five attempts, with Olivia McLoughlin scoring the only successful spot-kick.

This defeat concludes Leicester's five-year tenure in the top tier of English women's football, allowing Charlton to secure their place in the upcoming Women's Super League season. The absence of injured forward Alisha Lehmann was a significant factor in Leicester's inability to break the deadlock during regular and extra time, despite substitutions including Ashleigh Neville and Rachel Williams.
Lehmann, who joined Leicester in January following a stint at Como, has endured a challenging season marked by limited impact. She appeared in only nine matches and scored once as the team finished last in the WSL standings. Her injury kept her out of the crucial play-off match, further hindering Leicester's offensive options.
At the club’s end-of-season awards, Lehmann received the Goal of the Season and Fans' Player of the Season honors, despite playing just 502 minutes and featuring in games that Leicester lost. This contrasted with the players' internal vote, which favored Shannon O'Brien, underscoring a difference between the dressing room's view and her widespread popularity, boosted by over 15 million Instagram followers.
Looking forward, Leicester City Women face a significant rebuilding phase as they prepare for competition in the second division for the first time since 2021. The relegation also raises questions about Lehmann's future with the club, as she must decide whether to stay and help the team aim for promotion or pursue opportunities to return to top-flight football elsewhere.
