Dowman, 16, Scores Twice for Arsenal in League Cup Win at Ipswich

At 16 years and 258 days, Max Dowman became the second-youngest player to score for Arsenal in League Cup history. His two goals powered the Gunners to a 4-1 win against Ipswich Town at Portman Road in the competition’s third round on 19 September 2026.

Dowman opened the scoring in the seventh minute. After beating Ipswich defender Cedric Kipre with a quick piece of trickery, he advanced one-on-one against goalkeeper Christian Walton and placed a precise shot from inside the box.

He struck again in the 47th minute to make it 3-0. Receiving a smooth through ball inside the area, Dowman guided a low, creeping shot past Walton and into the net.

Opta’s historical ranking

According to Opta, Dowman ranks second on the list of the three youngest scorers for a Premier League club in the League Cup — a list composed entirely of Arsenal players. Cesc Fabregas holds the record at 16 years and 212 days, having scored against Wolverhampton in 2003. Jack Wilshere follows at 16 years and 266 days, having scored against Sheffield United in 2008.

A rare double at 16

Dowman became only the second 16-year-old to score twice in a single match across all competitions for a Premier League club. He matched Wayne Rooney’s feat for Everton against Wrexham in the League Cup in October 2002.
