FA charges Arbeloa with misconduct over Man United bias claims

Alvaro Arbeloa faces an FA misconduct charge following his post-match remarks about officiating during the Premier League fixture between Fulham and Manchester United. The Spanish manager’s comments, made after a 1-1 stalemate at Craven Cottage, have triggered formal action from football’s governing body.

Manchester United visited Fulham on the final weekend before the international break, seeking to halt a two-game losing streak. Michael Carrick’s side had previously suffered defeats against Manchester City in the league and Brighton & Hove Albion in the EFL Cup. The visitors fell behind in the 63rd minute due to a Lisandro Martinez own goal.

United struggled to find an equaliser until Matheus Cunha netted in the 89th minute, salvaging a single point. Despite avoiding a third consecutive loss, the team remains positioned 12th in the Premier League standings. This placement has intensified scrutiny regarding Carrick’s leadership of the squad.

Arbeloa's allegations

Frustrated by dropping points at home, Arbeloa directed criticism toward match officials immediately after the game. He alleged that decisions favored the opposition, specifically citing an incident involving Harry Maguire. “You can see before they scored, the foul against [Harry] Maguire, he’s a guy who is 100 kilos. Every decision was for them,” Arbeloa stated.

The Fulham boss suggested pre-existing expectations influenced the officiating. “And I knew. I knew after the game against Man City... that they [would not] let Manchester United lose here. We deserved a little bit more,” he added. His remarks appeared to reference VAR controversies from the previous weekend’s match where United lost 1-0 to City.

In that earlier fixture, Erling Haaland’s winning goal was initially flagged offside but allowed after VAR intervention. Replays indicated the goal should have been disallowed, leading the refereeing body to apologize to United and sanction VAR official Matthew Donohue. Arbeloa implied officials attempted to compensate for that error during the Craven Cottage match.

Official FA response

The Football Association confirmed the disciplinary action in a statement released Wednesday. The regulator charged Arbeloa with misconduct based on comments made after the Sunday, September 20 fixture. The statement specified: “It is alleged that the Fulham manager acted in an improper manner by making comments in a post-match interview that imply bias and/or question the integrity of a match official.”

Arbeloa has been granted until Thursday, October 1, to submit a formal response to the charges. The development comes as United prepares for their next league match against Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday, October 10.
