Fenerbahce Targets Mason Greenwood for Champions League Campaign
Mason Greenwood has become the leading transfer target for Fenerbahce's presidential hopefuls as the Turkish club prepares for Champions League play-offs next season.

Fenerbahce's presidential candidates have identified Mason Greenwood as their top transfer priority ahead of the upcoming season, signaling the striker's possible return to Europe's premier club competition. The 24-year-old forward, currently with Marseille, is expected to depart the French club this summer, with Turkey offering a new opportunity to compete in the Champions League.
Reports indicate that both Aziz Yildirim, the former president of Fenerbahce, and Hakan Safi, his rival in the presidential race, are keen on securing Greenwood's signature. An official decision on the club's leadership is expected this Sunday, and personal contract terms with Greenwood are not expected to be an obstacle. The Istanbul-based club is prepared to support whichever candidate wins to finalize the transfer.
Despite Greenwood's strong individual performance at Marseille, where he scored 48 goals in 81 appearances and finished joint-second in the Ligue 1 golden boot race last season with 16 goals, the French club is open to offers. Marseille's sporting director, Gregory Lorenzi, confirmed last week that the club is willing to negotiate a transfer despite Greenwood having three years left on his contract.
Greenwood has been rebuilding his career since leaving Manchester United, where an internal investigation barred him from playing again following the dropping of legal charges in February 2023. His time in France has attracted attention, including a recent apology from Tottenham manager Roberto De Zerbi for defending Greenwood during his Marseille tenure. If a transfer occurs, Manchester United stands to gain a substantial sell-on fee from the €31.6 million (£26.6 million) deal that sent Greenwood to Marseille in July 2024.
Fenerbahce secured a spot in the Champions League play-offs next season by finishing as runners-up in the Turkish Super Lig, trailing champions Galatasaray by three points. This Champions League qualification offers Greenwood a more appealing prospect compared to Marseille, which finished fifth in Ligue 1 and will compete in the Europa League. Although Serie A club Roma is also linked with Greenwood, the striker's next move depends largely on the outcome of Fenerbahce's presidential election this Sunday before any official bids are submitted.
