Marseille Open to Transfer Offers for Mason Greenwood This Summer

Marseille is prepared to evaluate transfer proposals for Mason Greenwood in the summer market, according to Gregory Lorenzi, the club's recently appointed sporting director. Lorenzi, who succeeded Mehdi Benatia at the Stade Velodrome, revealed that the club is deeply considering the English forward's future as part of its financial planning.

Lorenzi officially took charge as Marseille's sporting director, arriving from Brest with a reputation for astute player recruitment. His appointment marks a new chapter for the Ligue 1 club as he assumes responsibility for shaping the team's sporting direction.

Expressing his enthusiasm on the club’s official website, Lorenzi said, "Joining Olympique de Marseille is a chance, an honor, and a great challenge that I am proud to take up. Greenwood's future remains a central issue for Lorenzi. The forward, formerly of Manchester United, played a significant role in Marseille's 2025-2026 season, featuring in 45 matches across all competitions and recording 26 goals alongside 11 assists. Despite his on-field contributions, his substantial market value positions him as a likely candidate for transfer as Marseille aims to comply with financial regulations and adjust its budget for the 2026-27 season.

Addressing Greenwood's situation in an interview with L'Equipe, Lorenzi acknowledged the possibility of a summer transfer. "He is one of the players who is the subject of great reflection," the sporting director stated. "If an opportunity presents itself, inevitably, it will have to be considered. But there is the position of the club, that of the player, it is also up to us to manage it internally and to find the best possible solution for all parties."

In addition to individual player decisions, Lorenzi outlined a strategic shift in Marseille's recruitment approach. Following a fifth-place finish in Ligue 1 and qualification for the Europa League rather than the Champions League, the club intends to focus less on expensive star signings and more on assembling a cohesive team that connects with the supporters. Emphasis will also be placed on developing talent from the club’s youth academy.

Explaining his recruitment philosophy to L'Equipe, Lorenzi said, "It's going to be necessary to be a little more inventive in recruitment. I prioritize the collective. We will have to manage to go and find players capable of creating a connection, an identity. Players who will fight on the pitch, and with whom the supporters will be able to identify, including also the training centre, with a few young people emerging to develop them and eventually have returns on investment in the longer term."

The timing of Lorenzi's arrival coincides with heightened scrutiny from the DNCG, the financial regulatory body overseeing French football clubs. The potential sale of a valuable asset like Greenwood could provide Marseille with the financial flexibility needed to pursue the innovative signings Lorenzi has promised to the club’s supporters.
