FIFA has announced the adoption of a new protocol for pre-match ceremonies at the 2026 World Cup, aiming to deliver a more spectacular experience for fans during the historic tournament.

According to The Athletic, the updated system will completely change how teams line up during the national anthems. Instead of the traditional arrangement along the sidelines, all players listed for the match, including substitutes, will gather around the center circle.

Additionally, giant flags representing the participating countries will be spread across the pitch. Players will enter the field through a special corridor near the tunnel, accompanied by children, creating a scene intended to enhance the celebratory atmosphere of the event.

This approach builds on organizational concepts previously implemented during the Club World Cup, where FIFA sought to amplify the spectacle and add excitement to the moments before kickoff.

The traditional elements of the ceremony will remain after the national anthems, including the group handshake, official photos of the starting lineup, and the coin toss between the team captains before the match begins.

FIFA also plans to introduce new visual effects in the later stages of the tournament, such as lighting displays, colored smoke, and fireworks shows, with the goal of transforming matches into comprehensive entertainment experiences inside the stadiums.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino emphasized that the new changes aim to highlight the feelings of unity, pride, and belonging represented by the national teams. He noted that gathering players and referees in the center circle will offer fans a different and more impactful scene before matches commence.

This protocol is expected to debut at the start of the 2026 World Cup, which will feature 48 teams for the first time in the tournament’s history and will be hosted across the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
