Filipe Luis Agrees to Manage Monaco, Rejecting Leverkusen and Chelsea
Filipe Luis has agreed to become Monaco’s head coach, turning down offers from Bayer Leverkusen, Chelsea, and Benfica to lead the Ligue 1 club until 2028.

Filipe Luis is preparing to embark on his first significant managerial role in Europe after reportedly finalizing a deal to become the new head coach of Monaco. The former defender, known for his time at Chelsea and Atletico Madrid, has been named the unexpected choice for the Ligue 1 club despite interest from several other European teams.
The football management landscape has witnessed a surprising development as Luis is set to replace Sebastien Pocognoli at Monaco, who is departing after an eight-month tenure. This transition marks a new chapter for the club at Stade Louis II.
Bayer Leverkusen, who had targeted Luis as their leading candidate for the managerial position, now face a setback as the Brazilian opts for Monaco. The German Bundesliga club sought to inject fresh tactical insight by appointing Luis, whose playing career was distinguished, but their efforts were unsuccessful.
In addition to Leverkusen, Luis was linked with a potential return to Chelsea and interest from Benfica. However, the project proposed by Monaco’s sporting director, Thiago Scuro, proved compelling enough to secure Luis’s commitment swiftly, surprising many observers within the football community.
The contract signed with Monaco extends until June 2028, indicating the club’s intention to establish a long-term strategy under Luis’s guidance. This duration is designed to provide the 40-year-old coach with the necessary stability to implement his football philosophy in one of Europe’s top leagues.
Thiago Scuro played a pivotal role behind the scenes to finalize the agreement before other interested clubs could advance their offers. The connection between the two Brazilians reportedly influenced Luis’s decision to choose Monaco as the ideal environment for his managerial growth.
Prior to this appointment, Luis experienced a rapid rise in coaching following a successful period at Flamengo from 2024 until March 2026. During his time in Rio de Janeiro, he led the team to a league championship and secured the Copa Libertadores in 2025, achievements that elevated his profile internationally and made a move to a major European league a natural progression.
Luis’s credentials as a player remain notable, having been regarded as one of the premier left-backs of his era. His accolades include winning the Premier League with Chelsea and multiple trophies with Atletico Madrid, underscoring his extensive experience at the highest levels of football.
