Fire Engulfs Libyan PM's Office After Football Protest
Football fans set fire to the Libyan prime minister's office in Tripoli, protesting a disputed penalty call.
A fire has damaged part of the Government of National Unity's prime ministerial headquarters in central Tripoli, set ablaze by angry football fans. Supporters of Tripoli's Al-Ittihad Club accused the family of Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh of favoring one team in the Libyan league over others.
The protest erupted after Al-Ittihad fans stormed the pitch in Tarhuna, furious that a penalty kick was not awarded in the final minutes of their match against Al-Suwaihli Misrata. The game was part of the country's western region championship playoffs.
Stadium cameras captured the sound of gunfire and chaos inside the venue, as well as injured individuals being transported by ambulance. Security forces intervened and opened fire to disperse the unauthorized fans, noting that Libyan league matches are held without spectators.
