Gamba Osaka stuns Al-Nassr at home, denies Ronaldo first Asian title
Japanese side Gamba Osaka clinched the AFC Champions League 2 title with a 1-0 victory over Saudi Arabia's Al-Nassr in Riyadh, denying Cristiano Ronaldo his first continental trophy in Asia.
Japanese club Gamba Osaka captured the AFC Champions League 2 crown on Saturday, defeating Saudi powerhouse Al-Nassr 1-0 at Al-Awwal Park Stadium in Riyadh. The victory marked a historic achievement for the visiting side, who silenced a home crowd expecting a triumphant night for the Saudi giants.
The decisive moment came in the 30th minute when Turkish midfielder Deniz Hummet found the back of the net, scoring the only goal of the match. Gamba Osaka owed its triumph largely to his clinical finish, which left Al-Nassr's defense scrambling for the remainder of the first half.
Al-Nassr pushed hard for an equalizer in the second half, launching wave after wave of attacks, but Gamba Osaka's defense held firm. The Saudi side failed to convert any of its chances, and the Japanese team walked away with the trophy.
Ronaldo's Asian dream deferred
The defeat dealt a blow to veteran Portuguese star Cristiano Ronaldo, captain of Al-Nassr, who had been chasing his first Asian title in a glittering career. Despite having won the UEFA Champions League multiple times with Real Madrid and Manchester United, Ronaldo was unable to add an Asian crown to his collection.
However, the 41-year-old still has a golden opportunity to secure the Saudi Pro League title. Al-Nassr will host Damak in the final matchday of the season on Thursday, and a victory would guarantee them the league championship.
