Manchester United Plans Three Key Midfield Signings for 2026-27 Season
Manchester United is preparing a major midfield overhaul for the 2026-27 season, targeting three significant signings to reshape the squad.

Manchester United is preparing for a substantial midfield transformation during the 2026-27 season, aiming to finalize several key acquisitions to strengthen their squad.
Entering 2026, the club anticipated making significant changes in midfield but chose to hold off on transfers in January, awaiting suitable candidates for the summer window.
With Casemiro departing as a free agent and Manuel Ugarte strongly linked with a transfer, United is actively seeking reinforcements to support the players who will remain.
Michael Carrick’s midfield options for the upcoming season are beginning to take shape as the club moves to secure new talent.
Projected Starting Lineup
Bruno Fernandes is expected to be a central figure, likely positioned in the number 10 role. Fernandes recently set a Premier League record for most assists in a single season and is entering the final year of his contract, though he has expressed contentment at Old Trafford.
United is also preparing a bid for West Ham midfielder Mateus Fernandes, a fellow Portuguese international. Despite enduring consecutive relegations with Southampton and West Ham, Mateus Fernandes is highly regarded and could command a transfer fee near £80 million.
The 21-year-old is projected to play in a double pivot role and is considered a potential starter at that valuation.
Depending on budget availability, United may pursue another significant signing alongside Mateus Fernandes. While Elliot Anderson is reportedly beyond their financial reach and Sandro Tonali might be too costly, alternatives like Alex Scott and Carlos Baleba remain on the shortlist.
Each candidate brings Premier League experience, which is viewed as advantageous. United has also demonstrated interest in players from outside England, exemplified by their pursuit of Ederson from Atalanta.
Ideally, adding Tonali alongside Fernandes would complete the midfield rebuild. However, signing Scott, a promising homegrown player who might otherwise join Liverpool following Andoni Iraola from Bournemouth, could represent a practical alternative.
Carlos Baleba’s recent form has been inconsistent, which may reduce his market value and make him a more attractive option for United.
Midfield Rotation and Backup Options
Kobbie Mainoo is expected to compete for a rotation role under Carrick, potentially benefiting from more opportunities compared to his time under Ruben Amorim. Mainoo regained form after Carrick’s midseason appointment last year and has committed his future to the club.
Ederson, a versatile Brazilian midfielder new to the Premier League, is anticipated to provide energy and flexibility across midfield positions. Although his immediate inclusion in the starting lineup is uncertain, he is expected to challenge for playing time as the season advances.
United’s depth could be further enhanced if academy graduate Tyler Fletcher steps up to contribute.
Mason Mount’s future at the club appears uncertain after three seasons marked by underwhelming performances.
Regardless of the approach taken to refresh the midfield, Manchester United aims to establish a foundation for sustained success, similar to their strategy in strengthening the attack last summer.
