Manchester United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo describes his matchday preparations, pre-game rituals, and the atmosphere at Old Trafford before kickoff.

This season has seen Kobbie Mainoo establish himself firmly in Manchester United’s starting lineup after a challenging period under former head coach Ruben Amorim.
Mainoo initially found it difficult to break into the first team during Amorim’s tenure and was close to securing a loan move to SSC Napoli. However, following Amorim’s dismissal, Mainoo regained his place in the squad and has maintained his position since.
Last month, he committed his future to the club by signing a new contract. Additionally, the midfielder earned a call-up to England’s World Cup squad competing in the United States.
In an interview with the club’s official website, Mainoo provided insight into his dietary choices before matches. He stated that he does not adhere to a strict meal plan but adjusts based on how he feels, opting for more carbohydrates like pasta when anticipating a physically demanding game.
On matchdays, his breakfast typically consists of eggs, avocado, or sourdough bread. He also mentioned that if the kickoff is at 12:30 pm, he is willing to consume a substantial breakfast, including pasta at 9 am, to ensure he has sufficient energy.
During the journey to the stadium, Mainoo prefers to spend time alone, engaging with social media or listening to music. Upon arrival at the dressing room, he changes quickly and dedicates 20 to 25 minutes to stretching while listening to music.
He then receives treatment on the bed before continuing his preparation by listening to more music and participating in a light kickabout or two-touch exercises if a ball is available. Mainoo also revealed that he always consumes a shot of beetroot juice before matches.
He noted that many teammates engage in ball play within the dressing room, highlighting that Amad, who sits beside him, frequently kicks a ball around.
Mainoo expressed that he does not consider himself superstitious. He tries to avoid falling into repetitive routines that might foster superstition, often changing his actions if he notices a pattern developing during matchdays.
The midfielder described the sensation of waiting to enter the pitch at Old Trafford as an intense and euphoric experience, with the energy from over seventy thousand fans feeling almost tangible. He emphasized the unique atmosphere created by the crowd’s support as players prepare to start the game.
At halftime, Mainoo focuses on relaxing and replenishing his energy to prepare for the second half.
After matches, Mainoo explained that the team typically feels relief rather than exuberant happiness following a win. He stated that securing three points is the priority and that the squad aims to normalize winning. The manager’s post-match talk then directs the team’s focus forward.
