A ruptured quadricep has forced former Manchester United goalkeeper Mark Bosnich to prepare for surgery after an injury sustained during a celebrity penalty shootout event held ahead of the World Cup.

While playing as goalkeeper, Bosnich faced a penalty kick from former AFL executive Gillon McLachlan. Though he successfully saved the shot, Bosnich immediately cried out in pain and fell to the ground.

Some onlookers initially thought the reaction was a joke, with event host Archie Thompson commenting, "I hope it is a stitch up, but if it is, man, his acting is incredible."

After managing to stand, Bosnich carefully moved to the sidelines and applied ice to his injured leg. He was later taken to hospital, according to reports from the Manchester Evening News.

Photographs from the event show Bosnich smiling while holding ice on the affected leg. The 54-year-old has since confirmed to Nine that surgery will be necessary to address the injury.

Mark Bosnich is scheduled to work as a pundit for Australia's broadcast coverage of the upcoming World Cup in North America. Australia is set to compete in the tournament alongside Turkey, the USA, and Paraguay in the group stage.

During his playing career, Bosnich spent much of his time in the Premier League after moving from Sydney United to Manchester United as a young player. He made 38 appearances for United, achieving 15 clean sheets, although only three of those appearances were during his initial period at the club.

In 1991, Bosnich returned to Sydney United before transferring to Aston Villa six months later. He rejoined Manchester United in 1999 and remained there until 2001.

Between 2001 and 2003, he had a two-year stint with Chelsea. His second spell at Manchester United included being part of the squad that won the Premier League in the 1999/2000 season.

Internationally, Bosnich earned 17 caps for Australia from 1993 to 2000. He also scored a goal during the 13-0 World Cup qualification victory over the Solomon Islands in June 1997.
