Mason Greenwood is approaching a transfer to Roma following his time at Olympique de Marseille, where he was sold after being removed from Manchester United's squad in 2024 due to personal issues.

During his tenure in France, Greenwood delivered strong performances, earning a spot in the Ligue 1 Team of the Season and helping Marseille secure qualification for the Europa League.

His form has attracted attention from several prominent European clubs, and a move away from Marseille appears imminent this summer.

Negotiations with Roma Progressing

Although there was speculation about a possible return to England, Greenwood’s departure circumstances from Manchester United make such a move unlikely. Instead, Roma are reportedly prepared to sign the forward, with Corriere dello Sport indicating that discussions are at an “advanced stage.”

The Italian club is said to be negotiating the €55 million transfer fee, with Marseille demanding €50 million upfront and an additional €5 million contingent on performance-related objectives at Roma.

Greenwood has “already expressed his willingness” to relocate to Rome and is awaiting final agreement between the clubs to complete the transfer.

Financial Implications for Manchester United

Manchester United retain a financial interest in Greenwood’s future transfers due to a clause in his sale to Marseille, entitling them to approximately 40 percent of any subsequent transfer fee.

Consequently, a higher transfer fee from Roma would benefit United, potentially earning them around €20 million if the asking price is met.

Corriere dello Sport reports that Roma aim to reduce the fixed €50 million payment while increasing the bonus portion, seeking a compromise that satisfies all parties and results in a financial gain for Manchester United.

Meanwhile, Manchester United’s ownership group, INEOS, is actively pursuing new signings, prioritizing midfield reinforcements. Ederson from Brazil is expected to be the first acquisition of the summer.

Supporters anticipate additional marquee signings to strengthen the squad under Michael Carrick’s management ahead of the new season.

Funds generated from the Greenwood transfer would be welcomed at Old Trafford, where the club faces budget constraints partly attributed to previous ineffective transfer strategies over the past decade.
