Mbappe's Career Marked by Repeated Clashes with Coaches
A new dispute between Kylian Mbappe and Real Madrid coach Alvaro Arbeloa is the latest in a long history of conflicts with managers.

A fresh confrontation between Kylian Mbappe and Real Madrid assistant coach Alvaro Arbeloa has sparked widespread debate, but it is merely the most recent chapter in a career littered with disputes between the French star and his managers. Following a match against Oviedo, Mbappe unexpectedly addressed the media to express his dissatisfaction with Arbeloa, claiming the coach told him he was the "fourth-choice striker" behind Vinicius Junior, Franko Mastantuono, and Gonzalo.
Arbeloa fired back quickly in a press conference held while Mbappe was still speaking. "I don't have four strikers, and I never said such a thing to him," Arbeloa stated. "As long as I am here, I am the one who decides who plays, and I don't care about the player's name." This incident is not an isolated one, as Mbappe has previously clashed with a long list of managers including Leonardo Jardim, Unai Emery, Thomas Tuchel, Mauricio Pochettino, Christophe Galtier, Luis Enrique, Carlo Ancelotti, Xabi Alonso, and Didier Deschamps.
Tuchel: Repeated Fury Over Substitutions
The relationship between Mbappe and Thomas Tuchel at Paris Saint-Germain was one of the most tense periods of the player's career, according to Spanish newspaper "Mundo Deportivo". In February 2020, during a Ligue 1 match against Montpellier, Tuchel decided to substitute Mbappe for Edinson Cavani in the 70th minute despite the team leading 5-0, which infuriated the French star.
Mbappe's annoyance was evident as he left the pitch. Tuchel tried to calm him down and placed his hands on his shoulders, but the player refused to engage and walked to the bench with angry gestures. This was not the only such incident. In December 2019, during another match against Montpellier, Mbappe was visibly angry after being substituted in the 90th minute. He also stormed off the pitch in frustration during a game against Nantes after being replaced with 15 minutes remaining. Tuchel later insisted his decisions were "purely technical," adding, "I am the coach, and I am the one who makes the sporting decisions."
Pochettino: PSG "Wasn't Scary"
Mauricio Pochettino endured immense pressure during his second and final season with Paris Saint-Germain, despite winning the Ligue 1 title. However, the Champions League round-of-16 exit to Real Madrid was a severe blow that led to his departure. Before his exit was officially announced, Mbappe made comments interpreted as a veiled criticism, stating that PSG had not been "scary" enough over the previous two seasons.
"Last season we weren't very scary, and we were much less solid," Mbappe told BFMTV. "We want to regain that prestige again in France."
Galtier and the "Axis Gang" Accusation
With Christophe Galtier's arrival at PSG, Mbappe entered one of his most controversial disputes. After a goalless draw against Reims, the French striker posted a message on Instagram that read: "Draw.. #ThisIsParis #AxisGang," a phrase many interpreted as a direct criticism of the coach's playing style.
Mbappe felt uncomfortable with his tactical role, as he was being asked to play as a target man with his back to goal. He later said during a France national team camp: "I play differently with France. Here I have much more freedom. We have Olivier Giroud as a clear striker who pins defenders, which allows me to move into spaces. At PSG, it's completely different." Galtier attempted to downplay the crisis, asserting that the player's reaction stemmed from disappointment with the performance and result.
Enrique: Renewed Tension Over Tactical Decisions
Mbappe experienced clear tensions with Luis Enrique during his final season at PSG. On multiple occasions, the player's displeasure was obvious due to the coach's decisions regarding substitutions and reduced playing time. During a match against Marseille, Mbappe left the pitch angrily after being substituted in the 60th minute. He shook hands with some coaching staff members and players but ignored Enrique and walked straight to the dressing room.
The Spanish coach responded with a firm tone in his press conference, stating: "The same thing happens every week, and it's very exhausting. I am the coach, and I am the one who makes the decisions every day, and I will continue to do so until my last day in Paris."
