Lionel Messi began the World Cup break earlier than expected, causing concern in Argentina as the nature and severity of his injury remain unclear ahead of the global tournament.

In the early hours of Monday, during the match between Inter Miami and Philadelphia Union, an unusual event occurred when Messi, who is rarely substituted, left the field in the 73rd minute.

Messi missed the final moments of the game, which saw Luis Suarez complete a hat-trick, leading Inter Miami, the reigning Major League Soccer champions, to a commanding 6-4 victory over the league's bottom team.

Despite assisting two goals and the strong performance of teammate Germán Berterame, who scored twice in a historic first half for Inter Miami, Messi effectively stopped playing by the 71st minute. He was seen repeatedly holding the hamstring muscle of his left leg before choosing not to proceed to the bench after being substituted.

When Mateo Silvetti replaced him, Messi headed directly to the tunnel leading to the locker rooms, walking unassisted though slowly and without any medical staff accompanying him.

During the match, Rodrigo De Paul scored a late goal in stoppage time to extend his team's lead, coinciding with his birthday. Heavy rain began at the start of the second half, making the pitch slippery and causing some players to slip.

It remains unclear whether Messi's departure was a precautionary measure or due to a genuine injury, especially since he did not appear to make any major missteps during the peak of the rainfall.

This injury raises questions about Messi's participation in the World Cup, particularly as he has previously stated he would only compete if fully fit.

Argentina's title defense starts on June 16, making the recovery timeline critical for Messi.

Record-Setting High-Scoring Match

The match itself was unusually thrilling, with Milan Iloski scoring a first-half hat-trick, including two penalties, and Bruno Damian adding another goal for Philadelphia Union. The visitors surprised the home side by taking a quick 2-0 lead within the first ten minutes. The first half concluded with an extraordinary 4-4 draw.

The Major League Soccer (MLS) confirmed that eight goals in a single half set a new record in the league's history.

Messi's World Cup History and Group Stage Schedule

Messi has participated in five previous World Cups and is the only player to have won the Golden Ball award twice, first in 2014 and again in 2022 when he led Argentina to the world title.

Argentina is placed in Group 10 for the World Cup, with group stage matches scheduled against Algeria in Kansas City on June 16, Austria in Arlington, Texas on June 22, and Jordan in Arlington on June 27.

Inter Miami's Standings Ahead of the Break

Inter Miami enters the break positioned second in the Eastern Conference with 31 points from 15 games, having secured nine wins, two draws, and four losses. They trail Nashville, the conference leader, by two points. Nashville has 33 points from 14 matches, including ten wins, one draw, and three losses.

Additionally, Inter Miami ranks fourth in the Supporters' Shield standings, a competition won last season by Philadelphia Union.
