Mexico's national football team defeated Australia 1-0 in a friendly match held this morning as part of their preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. This upcoming tournament will feature 48 teams for the first time in history and will be hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

The only goal of the match was scored by Jon Vásquez in the 27th minute with a precise header, granting Mexico a morale-boosting win ahead of the World Cup.

Mexico is preparing for a strong start in the 2026 World Cup, which it will co-host with the United States and Canada. The team will open its group stage campaign against South Africa at the Azteca Stadium on June 11. Mexico will then face South Korea and the Czech Republic in Group A, a group described as relatively balanced but demanding high concentration to secure advancement to the knockout rounds.

Australia will begin its World Cup journey on June 13 against Turkey, followed by matches against the United States—one of the three host nations—and Paraguay.

Mexico holds a consistent record in World Cup tournaments, having reached the round of 16 in seven consecutive editions from 1994 to 2018. This record reflects the team's extensive experience and ability to manage the pressures of major competitions, providing a psychological advantage in the qualification race.

The Mexican team has qualified for the World Cup finals 18 times and achieved its best results by reaching the quarterfinals in 1970 and 1986. Throughout its World Cup history, Mexico has played 60 matches, winning 17, drawing 15, and losing 28, scoring 62 goals while conceding 101.
