Mourinho blasts 'opportunists' over Vinicius-Prestianni clash
Jose Mourinho defended his neutral stance on the Vinicius Junior and Gianluca Prestianni dispute, citing a lack of verified evidence.

Jose Mourinho has pushed back against critics who accused him of inaction during the confrontation between Vinicius Junior and Gianluca Prestianni. The Real Madrid manager stated he was subjected to severe public scrutiny for declining to choose a side in the incident, which occurred earlier this year.
Champions League protocol triggered
The conflict originated in February during a Champions League round of 16 match between Benfica and Real Madrid. Officials paused play for ten minutes after the referee invoked UEFA’s anti-racism protocol following a complaint from the Brazilian forward. European football’s governing body subsequently sanctioned the Argentine player for discriminatory behavior, distinguishing it from outright racism.
Lack of proof dictated neutrality
In an interview with Il Corriere dello Sport, conducted four months into his tenure at the Santiago Bernabeu, the 63-year-old coach addressed the aftermath. He noted that Prestianni was not banned for racism, describing the situation as uncontrollable. "I was slaughtered by public opinion, mainly by so many opportunists," Mourinho said.
Mourinho emphasized that his decision to remain neutral stemmed from conflicting narratives and an absence of verified evidence. "One player was saying the accusations against him weren't true and nobody had the proof," he explained. "In that position, you simply cannot take a side." Despite the tension, he expressed satisfaction that both young attackers have moved past the event, referring to them as a "fantastic kid" and a "golden boy."
Upcoming fixtures in La Liga
Before facing Roma in an emotional return to Italy on Wednesday, October 14, Mourinho must guide his team through a La Liga matchday eight fixture against Villarreal on Saturday. A victory at the Santiago Bernabeu is crucial for maintaining domestic momentum ahead of their European commitments.
