Real Madrid now faces a €14 million fee to secure José Mourinho’s return as head coach, doubling the initial €7 million release clause that expired on Tuesday, according to reports from Bild and RTP. Mourinho remains under contract with Benfica until 2027, complicating the club’s efforts to finalize the deal.

Earlier this year, Real Madrid’s president Florentino Pérez publicly criticized the media over what he called a "smear campaign" and announced upcoming presidential elections, where he will face challenger Enrique Riquelme for the first time. The club’s plan to complete Mourinho’s appointment on Whit Monday has been postponed pending the election outcome, though Benfica anticipates Mourinho will return to the Bernabéu this summer for a second tenure following his 2010–2013 spell.

Benfica is expected to appoint Marco Silva as their next manager after his contract with Fulham expires this summer. Silva led Fulham to an 11th-place finish in the Premier League last season and has been managing the club since 2021.

Mourinho joined Benfica in September 2023 after a short period at Fenerbahce. Despite an unbeaten league run, he did not secure any trophies as Porto won the league title and eliminated Benfica in the cup quarter-finals. Benfica’s Champions League campaign also ended prematurely at the play-off stage against Real Madrid.

Real Madrid’s Internal Struggles and Coaching Changes

Real Madrid’s season started poorly despite progressing in the Champions League against Benfica. Conflicts with key players contributed to Xabi Alonso’s departure after only a few months as head coach, following a Supercopa final loss to Barcelona in mid-January. Álvaro Arbeloa replaced Alonso but struggled to stabilize the team.

The club’s troubles deepened with an unexpected Copa del Rey exit in the round of 16 against Albacete and costly mistakes in the league, which left Real trailing Barcelona in the title race. Their Champions League journey ended in the quarter-finals with a defeat by Bayern Munich in April. Arbeloa’s exit at the end of the season became inevitable.

Arbeloa was unable to restore order or impose discipline within the squad. Reports in May highlighted heated disputes, particularly between Aurelien Tchouameni and Federico Valverde, while ongoing uncertainty surrounding Kylian Mbappé’s future added further tension.

As Mourinho prepares to return to Real Madrid’s bench, he will face the challenge of leading a team in urgent need of stability and clear direction.
