Real Madrid Fans’ Anti-Jewish, Anti-Muslim Chants Spark Outcry

A group of Real Madrid supporters ignited widespread controversy by chanting anti-Jewish and anti-Muslim slogans ahead of the club’s UEFA Champions League match against Inter Milan.

According to Spain’s Diario Sport, the Federation of Jewish Communities in Spain sent a formal letter to Rafael Lozano, president of the Royal Spanish Football Federation, expressing its “deep concern and firm rejection” of the chants issued near the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium.

What the federation’s letter stated

The letter specified that the chants included expressions hostile toward Jews and others targeting Muslims. It assessed one phrase as constituting explicit incitement to violence against Jews, while another conveyed, in its evaluation, a message of exclusion directed at Spanish Muslims on the basis of their religion or cultural identity.

The federation emphasized that such conduct does not reflect Real Madrid’s fanbase as a whole but called for a “clear and resolute response,” urging concrete measures to prevent recurrence.

Federation’s call for institutional action

It further affirmed the Royal Spanish Football Federation’s capacity to issue a public stance against such behavior—even though the incident occurred during a European competition—and stressed the need for coordinated action with clubs to confront intolerance and lack of tolerance.

Real Madrid defeated Inter Milan 2–1 on Tuesday in the Champions League, with goals scored by Kylian Mbappé and Federico Valverde.
