Real Madrid’s Mendy Contract Mystery Deepens After Surgery
Ferland Mendy’s severe thigh injury and a disputed contract end date leave his Real Madrid future uncertain until 2028.

A severe tear in the right rectus femoris tendon has cast the future of French left-back Ferland Mendy at Real Madrid into uncertainty, with conflicting reports about both his contract length and recovery timeline. The player underwent surgery last Monday in France, performed by renowned doctor Bertrand Sonnery-Cottet, marking a setback from a previous injury.
Estimates for Mendy’s absence vary widely. Optimistic circles close to the player suggest a return by the end of next August, while the club’s internal projections stretch to five months. Other media reports have even floated a potential absence of up to a full year.
Contract Clause Dispute
A legal and administrative complication has emerged around what Spanish newspaper As describes as Mendy’s “mysterious contract.” Real Madrid never officially announced the details of his renewal, which took place in 2024; coach Carlo Ancelotti merely confirmed the extension during a press conference at the time. The core disagreement centers on the contract’s expiration date. Information leaked from the club indicates the deal runs until 2027, while sources close to the player insist to the newspaper that it extends through 2028.
Crowded Left-Back Position
This confusion comes as the squad faces a logjam at left-back, particularly after signing “Carreras” from Benfica for €50 million, alongside the presence of Fran García. The surplus of players, combined with Mendy’s high salary and concerning medical record, makes offloading or marketing him a difficult proposition.
