Bernardo Silva turned down Pep Guardiola’s offer to become Manchester City captain, initially angering his manager.

A phone call between Bernardo Silva and Pep Guardiola ended with the Portuguese midfielder rejecting the captain’s armband, a decision that initially frustrated the Spanish manager. The 31-year-old, who will leave the club at the end of the season when his contract expires, disclosed the conversation on Friday.
Silva joined City from Monaco for £43 million and has become a club legend, helping secure 19 major trophies, including six Premier League titles and one Champions League. His pivotal role in the team’s domestic dominance led Guardiola to choose him as Kevin De Bruyne’s successor for the captaincy.
Breaking with his usual tradition of letting players vote for a new captain, Guardiola informed Silva directly of his decision. The Portuguese international declined, arguing that the armband should go to a player who would remain at the club longer.
Silva told the Daily Mail: “Pep felt a bit upset with me at first. We didn’t fully agree, because I said to him: look, you know my decision, I’m leaving after a year, and maybe it’s better for the club to choose a captain who will stay longer.”
He added: “We spoke again, and in the end he decided to go ahead with his decision, and I felt very proud. I just thought it was better for the club that the armband be held by a player who would stay for three, four, or five more years.”
Silva announced his departure from the Etihad last month in an emotional social media post. His final match for City is expected to be against Aston Villa in the last round of the Premier League, a fixture that could decide the title.
He still has a chance to add another trophy to his collection when City face Chelsea in the FA Cup final at Wembley on Saturday.
