England coach Thomas Tuchel expressed frustration over his team's erratic first-half display in their friendly win over New Zealand in Florida.

Thomas Tuchel, the German head coach of the England national football team, voiced his frustration with his squad’s performance during the first half of their friendly match against New Zealand. The game, held in hot conditions in Florida on Saturday, ended in a narrow victory for England as part of their intensive preparations for the 2026 tournament.
The England team arrived in Florida earlier in the week to begin a training camp in warm weather. Saturday’s match marked the first of two scheduled friendlies. Tuchel made a complete lineup change at halftime after England took a 1-0 lead thanks to a superb header from Harry Kane. Kane scored in stoppage time of the first half, connecting with a cross from Djed Spence.
The solitary goal remained the match’s only score at Raymond James Stadium, where attendance was modest. Tuchel expressed satisfaction with the team’s second-half performance, contrasting it with his disappointment in some players’ approach during the opening 45 minutes.
“I am happy with the result but not entirely satisfied. I preferred the second half over the first,” Tuchel said.
According to the British Press Association (PA Media), Tuchel commented, “I think we were more aggressive and stronger in the second half, both in possession and in regaining the ball. We created more chances and made better runs inside the penalty area. We also maintained our positions better, which gave us greater speed in our play.”
He added, “In the first half, we lacked positional discipline and there was a lot of erratic play. This slowed down our rhythm and made counter-pressing very difficult because we were not in the positions we had planned when starting attacks. That sums up what happened in the match.”
Tuchel further explained the context, noting that many players last played together in November, about six months ago, and they had only trained together in four sessions. “I completely mixed the lineup to give everyone a full 45 minutes, so they had not played before in this formation and with these tactics. Add to that the weather conditions and the pitch surface, and it is natural for the match to look like this,” he said.
Tuchel also expressed relief that his players experienced the “very hot” conditions after the team had faced some rain and cloud cover at their base in West Palm Beach. He was pleased that no player suffered injury on the poor-quality pitch in Tampa ahead of their second friendly against Costa Rica in Orlando on Wednesday.
