England manager Thomas Tuchel endorsed Jude Bellingham as a future permanent captain following his leadership role in the Nations League victory over the Czech Republic.
England head coach Thomas Tuchel has publicly supported the idea of Jude Bellingham assuming the permanent captaincy, citing the midfielder’s leadership during the recent Nations League triumph against the Czech Republic. The Real Madrid player was entrusted with the armband for the closing stages of the 2-0 victory, a move that highlighted the growing confidence between the coach and the star.
The match in Prague saw Bellingham begin on the bench, a decision driven by physical management rather than tactical exclusion. He entered the field in the 71st minute, replacing Bayern Munich striker Harry Kane, who had worn the captain’s band earlier in the contest. This substitution allowed Bellingham to lead the team through the final phase of the crucial European fixture.
Tuchel addressed the possibility of a long-term captaincy role directly when questioned about Bellingham’s potential. "If you are the captain at the end of these matches, you can for sure be the permanent captain," the manager stated, as reported by The Standard. He noted that even in this brief encounter, Bellingham displayed confidence and willingness to contribute from the sidelines, describing the appointment as a well-earned reward.
This instance marked not the first time Bellingham led the senior national side; he previously captained the team during a World Cup warm-up victory against Costa Rica in June. However, Tuchel emphasized that resting him initially in Prague was a precautionary measure. The coach explained that the quick turnaround required in the tournament schedule posed risks, particularly given Bellingham’s limited experience with such intense frequency during the current season.
"We had this small talk today about his role and we both had our stomachs said 'let's go again, let's start again,'" Tuchel revealed regarding their pre-match discussion. "And then both our heads said 'maybe 30 minutes is enough for today' because he hasn't played this quick turnaround through this season." The manager added that while Bellingham had done it before, they did not want to be the first to test his limits under these specific seasonal conditions.
Despite the positive outcome, concerns emerged regarding Bellingham’s immediate fitness. Tuchel confirmed that the creative midfielder suffered a minor issue late in the game against the Czech Republic. This development raises questions about his availability for the upcoming critical away match against Croatia in Rijeka on Saturday.
England faces a decisive challenge in Group A3, where Spain appears strong for a top-two finish. To secure the remaining quarter-final spot in the Nations League, Tuchel’s squad must defeat Croatia. The team will be eager to have their talisman fully fit and ready for this high-stakes encounter.
