Mourinho shifts focus to Bellingham as Madrid’s most consistent attacker
Jude Bellingham has emerged as Real Madrid's most reliable offensive threat under José Mourinho, outperforming teammates Mbappé and Vinícius Júnior in early-season metrics.

Kylian Mbappé continues to deal with knee issues while Vinícius Júnior struggles to regain peak physical condition. Amid these challenges, Jude Bellingham has returned to his standard form, establishing himself as the most dependable player in Real Madrid’s attacking lineup.
Bellingham’s statistical dominance
The English midfielder currently delivers the highest consistency for coach José Mourinho, according to reports from Marca. While his teammates remain vital to the squad’s long-term hopes, Bellingham stands out during this early phase of the season where the team is still finding its rhythm.
His performance extends beyond club duties, showing similar impact with the England national team. In eight official matches for Real Madrid, Bellingham recorded three goals and two assists. His technical output includes a 91% passing accuracy, 52 ball recoveries, and success in 52 of 84 one-on-one duels. He also contributed 12 key passes during this period.
Tactical adjustment by Mourinho
A significant factor in Bellingham’s resurgence is his deployment within Mourinho’s 4-2-3-1 formation. The Portuguese manager utilizes him as an attacking midfielder positioned close to the goal, granting him freedom to operate between defensive lines.
This approach aims to revive a strength displayed during Bellingham’s debut season at Real Madrid: his capacity to position himself inside the penalty area and execute decisive plays. During that campaign, he netted 23 goals and provided 13 assists, achievements that secured him third place in the Ballon d’Or voting.
Subsequent seasons saw increased midfield responsibilities lead to physical setbacks and reduced attacking influence. Mourinho’s current strategy restores some of that earlier autonomy. Although Bellingham retains defensive obligations and build-up roles, his primary positioning is now more advanced, allowing better utilization of his movement, dribbling, and ability to appear in scoring zones.
International versatility and praise
England head coach Thomas Tuchel employs a different but complementary philosophy, leveraging Bellingham’s versatility across various positions, including trials as a central striker. The coaching staff prioritizes a flexible structure that permits positional swaps among players.
This tactical flexibility was evident in the match against Croatia, where Bellingham influenced four of England’s seven goals by scoring once and creating three others. Roy Keane, the Manchester United legend, offered high praise following that performance. Speaking to ITV, the former midfielder highlighted Bellingham’s ball control alongside his substantial work rate off the ball and his ability to inspire teammates.
“He could become one of the best players of all time,” Keane stated. This sentiment reflects Bellingham’s elevated status in England, where he is viewed not merely as a young star at Real Madrid but as a leader shaping the national team’s future. A similar perception exists within the Madrid camp.
