The United States national soccer team secured a decisive 3-0 victory over Mexico in a friendly match held early this morning. The win serves as preparation for upcoming competitive fixtures for both sides.

Match details and records

Goals were scored by Julian Hall, Cavan Sullivan, and Malik Tillman at minutes 28, 62, and 84 respectively. The contest saw Mexican player Mateo Chavez sent off for misconduct. With his goal against Mexico, Cavan Sullivan established himself as the youngest player to score for the US national team in history, aged 17 years and 5 days.

Bochettino contract extension

Prior to the match, the U.S. Soccer Federation announced the extension of Argentine head coach Mauricio Pochettino’s contract until 2030. This decision follows the team's performance during the 2026 World Cup. Pochettino assumed leadership of the senior squad in September 2024, tasked with preparing the team for the tournament hosted on American soil.

Strategic development role

The new agreement expands Pochettino’s responsibilities beyond coaching the first team. He will contribute to the broader development of American soccer by supporting national team pathways, enhancing youth sectors, participating in coach education, and strengthening collaboration with domestic leagues and technical departments within the federation.

Coach's vision for growth

In statements published on the U.S. Soccer website, Pochettino noted that the past two years revealed significant potential to strengthen the national team program. He highlighted that fan enthusiasm during the World Cup reinforced their belief in what could be achieved locally. The Argentine manager expressed eagerness to transfer expertise across various sectors of American soccer, aiming to develop player, coach, and team pathways while leaving a sustainable impact beyond on-field results.

World Cup 2026 achievements

Under Pochettino’s guidance, the US team set several records during the 2026 World Cup. They topped their group for the third time in their history and defeated Bosnia and Herzegovina in the round of 32. This marked their first knockout stage victory in the tournament since the 2002 edition. The Americans also recorded a new high for wins in a single World Cup campaign before exiting in the round of 16 with a 4-1 loss to Belgium.

Upcoming tournaments

Pochettino is scheduled to lead the US team in future competitions, including the CONCACAF Nations League and the Gold Cup in 2027 and 2029. Preparations will also focus on events related to the 2030 World Cup. Additionally, the technical staff will support age-group teams during their participation in the Under-17 and Under-20 World Cups, as well as the 2028 Olympic Games hosted by the United States.
